Who is not afraid of a bat? Almost none of us would like the idea of spending even a minute in a cave with a bat. But do read this interesting folktale in order to realize a few things about this flying mammal.
Honey, the king of Cloud Land, celebrated his precious daughter Raki's marriage by calling for a Great Meeting. Honey asked Bat to go to invite Sun and he asked Dove to invite Moon. Dove flew as fast as she could to convey the message and Moon arrived on time. Bat, however, was mischievous and playful. He was distracted by many things on the way.
He got talking to Eagle, then decided to have a little snooze before going to Sun and, as usual, oberslept. So when Sun failed to arrive, Honey got suspicious and requested Dove to investigate.
Go and find out what has happened, the king ordered Dove.
When approached, Sun said he had not been invited at all. So Dove apologised over and over again and requested him to attend the Great Meeting.
In the meantime, king Honey had presented Moon with a beautiful silver cloak.
Wear this cloak and shine down on Earth where my dear daughter will make her new home. Let them see at night by your light. Your beauty will make them sing and dance at night. All children will praise and love you and admire your silver beauty.
Moon was very happy with the new responsibility. Moon felt very important too.
Sun arrived, looking rather cross for he felt a little insulted. Honey explained the reason for the delay in sending him the massage. The struggling Bat was brought in as a prisoner, tied hand and foot.
If I see you again, I will kill you, shouted Sun in great anger, shaking his fists at Bat.
Honey did not wish to give him the death sentence, as it was his darling daughter's wedding day and Bat was released with a stiff warning.
Sun was presented with a golden cloak. The king said:
Wear this golden cloak and shine down on Earth where my beloved daughter will make her home. Bless her and her family with your warmth. Your heat will make things grow and multiply and all living things will rejoice from dawn to dusk.
Sun was very happy with this important role. After all, it was an order from a king!
In the meantime, Bat flew quickly and hid in the darkest cave where Sun could not find him. He hung upside down so that even if Sun found him, he would not be able to recognize him easily. He came out only when it was dark. He ate only at night and that too, only insects and overripe fruits from trees. He was not only afraid of human beings but terrified of the heavenly body, Sun, too.
Now we know why there is a reason for everything. Even a bat hides from the light for a particular reason.
