The Meaning Of The Dream

A group of men from Belsand was travelling together to Sitamarhi. They had started from their village at dawn, hoping to reach their destination before nightfall. But the journey was long and when darkness fell, they were still a considerable distance away from Sitamarhi. So, they stopped at a resting place and after having cooked and eaten, they retired for the night.
One of the men had a dream. He dreamt that he was lost in a thick, dark jungle. The branches of the trees spread like umbrellas, shutting out all light. As he groped for his way, a big tusked elephant appeared before him. It advanced towards him with a slow, heavy tread. Nearer and nearer it came, moving its trunk and flapping its big ears. The man was seized with fright. He screamed.
He woke up and was in a pool of perspiration. Others woke up too, startled by the scream and came running to ask what had happened.
What is it? they cried.
I saw a huge elephant, said the man, trembling like a leaf.
The men ran to fetch their sticks. Where is it? they asked.
I saw the tusked elephant in my dream.
Oh! said the men and went back to sleep.
The following morning, all of them sat together and listened to the man relating his dream.

Friends, it was an evil dream. A tusked elephant is not a good omen.
What is the meaning? they asked. Then, the man began to interpret the dream.
If there is a tusked elephant, there will be elephant's dung.
If there is elephant's dung, it means there is paddy which the elephant has eaten.
Paddy means uncooked rice.
If there is uncooked rice, it means there is cooked rice.
Cooked rice is a thing found only in the village.
The village means our homes. Something must have happened since we left.
It is useless for us to go on when a tragedy has befallen our homes, said the man. Let us go back to the village and see what has happened.
The thought of the tragedy brought tears to their eyes. Crying their hearts out, they proceeded homewards.
By evening, they were near their rice fields. The sun was just setting in the western horizon. The boys of the village were playing while the women were sitting outside their homes, sewing and talking. Suddenly, they heard the mournful cries of men and started running helter-skelter in panic.
Our men are coming back crying. A dreadful thing must have happened, they said. Tears rushed to their eyes and crying aloud, they went to meet the men across the fields.

Seeing the weeping women, the man who had the dream, said, Look there! Did I not tell you that something must have happened?
So, the men cried more and hearing their wails, the women cried more and sobbed. The boys stopped playing and they too began to cry.
In this state, the two parties stood facing each other across the fields, saying nothing but crying louder and louder.
Thus, it became night. A stranger from another village was passing by and hearing the weird uproar. He came to see what was wrong. Who is dead? he asked, addressing the men.
We don't know who is dead, said the men and cried more at the thought of someone being dead.
Then, the stranger went over to the other side and asked the women, Why are you crying? Who is dead?
We don't know who is dead, they replied.
The stranger then told both the parties to stop crying, Why are you crying? Nothing dreadful has happened. Why don't you find out?
Then, stranger smiled and said, Do not jump to conclusions before finding out the fact.

I Must Feed My Mother

A king wants a splendid elephant for himself. Then, why does he let it go back to the forest as soon as he finds one. Let's read and find out!  Long, long ago,  in a forest, lived an elephant. He was big and strong and his skin was as white as milk. The white elephant loved his mother more than anything else in the world. More than himself, more than the sweet wild berries and fruits on the trees in the the forest, more than the juicy tubers hidden in the ground. The white elephants mother was blind. He would take good care of her. He found a nice, cool cave for her. In front of the cave, was a lake full of clear, shining water and lotuses. Water always makes an elephant's heart glad. The white elephant would fast feed his mother, only then would he eat. Whenever he could, he would tell her stories and tell her how the forest looked in the hot summer and during the monsoon when it poured. He would speak to her of the hills, of squirrels, birds and butterflies with b...

The Story Of Aakash

Mohammad Arbaz Arya was a very big name for a very little boy. I remember him as Arya which was what everybody called him. He lived in a small village near the foot of a mountain. His home was a mud but with a thatched roof. He had helped his family built it. Arya wore a cotton dhoti and a simple vest. He herded and milked his father's cows and collected firewood. He was a playful boy who loved to climb trees and play in the expansive green fields. He relished the hot gruel his mother cooked for him on a simmering coal fire. One day, Arya's father sent him on an errand. He was to go to the next village to bring some medicines from the doctor for his sick granny and get back as soon as he could. Remember, Arya,'' his father said, you must return home right after the job is done, no dilly-dallying! There is a solar eclipse today and you must not be outside under any circumstances. Go fast. Arya interrupted his father with a child's curiosity, Why is it dangerous, f...

WHY THE BAT FLIES AT NIGHT

Who is not afraid of a bat? Almost none of us would like the idea of spending even a minute in a cave with a bat. But do read this interesting folktale in order to realize a few things about this flying mammal. Honey, the king of Cloud Land, celebrated his precious daughter Raki's marriage by calling for a Great Meeting. Honey asked Bat to go to invite Sun and he asked Dove to invite Moon. Dove flew as fast as she could to convey the message and Moon arrived on time. Bat, however, was mischievous and playful. He was distracted by many things on the way. He got talking to Eagle, then decided to have a little snooze before going to Sun and, as usual, oberslept. So when Sun failed to arrive, Honey got suspicious and requested Dove to investigate. Go and find out what has happened, the king ordered Dove. When approached, Sun said he had not been invited at all. So Dove apologised over and over again and requested him to attend the Great Meeting. In the meantime, king Honey ha...
