Honesty Always Pays

This story throws light on the honest behaviour of a poor woodcutter. Let's read how he made the river Goddess happy by showing his honesty.

Ramu was a poor woodcutter in a village. He was the only man to earn money for his family. One day when he was cutting a dry branch of a tree on the bank of a river, his axe slipped from his hand and fell down into the river. At this the woodcutter began to weep loudly. At that very time, the river Goddess came out and saw the woodcutter. She offered him a golden axe. But the woodcutter refused to take it.
He said, It is not mine. Then the river Goddess gave him a silver axe. He did not accept this axe also. Then she gave the woodcutter his own iron axe.
Seeing his axe the woodcutters joy knew no bounds. He cried out, This is my axe! This is my axe! The river Goddess was pleased at the woodcutters honesty. She gave him the golden and the silver axe as a reward of his honesty. Ramu was very happy now.
