Pandora's Box

How did pain and suffering come to this world ?
Let's read and find out.

When the world was first created, it was a happy place of light and laughter; there was no such thing as sadness or pain. The sun shone every day and the gods came down from heaven to walk and talk with the humen who lived on the earth.
One afternoon, a man called Arya and his wife, Pandora, we're outside, tending to their flower garden when they saw the God Mercury approaching. He was bowed dawn by a dark, wooden chest that he was carrying on his shoulders and he looked hot and tired. Pandora rushed to get the worn out God a cool drink, while Arya helped him lower the chest onto the ground. It was tired with golden cords.
My friends, would you do me a great favour? sighed Mercury. It is so hot today and the box is very heavy! May I leave it here while I go on an errand?
Of course you can, smiled Arya.
Arya and the God heaved the chest indoors.
Then Mercury said, No one, under any circumstances, must open the box.
Don't worry, laughed Arya and Pandora and they waved the God off through the trees. All of a sudden, Pandora stopped still and frowned, Listen, Arya! she hissed, I am sure I heard someone whispering our names.
Arya and Pandora listened hard. At first, they heard nothin. Then, they heard the distant sound of Arya! Pandora! being called from outside.
It's our friends! cried Arya happily.
But Pandora looked puzzled and shook her head.
No, Arya, those are not the voices I heard, she said, firmly.
They must have been! Arya laughed.
Come on now, let's go and see everyone.
You go, Pandora insisted. I'd rather stay here for a while.

Arya shrugged and strode outside. As soon as he was gone, Pandora hurried over to the strange chest and waited. After only a few seconds, she heard it again - distant voices calling Pandora! Pandora! The voices were so low and whispery that Pandorawas not sure whether she was really hearing them or was just imagining it. She bent down closer and put her ear to the lid. No, this time she was sure. The chest was calling to her, Pandora! The voices pleaded.
Let us out, Pandora! We are trapped here in the darkness! Please help us to eacape!
Pandora jump back with a star. Mercury had expressly forbidden them or anyone else to open the chest. The voices sounded very sad and pitiful.
Pandora! they came again, Help us! We beg you!
Pandora could stand it no longer. Hurriedly, she knelt down and worked at the tight golden knots. All the time, the whispering and pleading voices filled her ears. At last, the knots we're undone and the gleaming cords fell away. She took a deep breath and apened the lid.
At once, Pandora realised she had done a terrible thing. The box had been crammed with all the evils in the world-thousands of tiny, brown, moth-like creature that stung people with their wings and caused pain and misery wherever they went. Now, because of Pandora the evils were free. They flew up out of the chest in a great swarm and fluttered all over Pandora's skin. For the very first time, Pandora felt pain and regret. She began to wail with despair but all too late. She slammed the lid back down onto the chest.
Outside, Arya heard his wife's cries and came running as fast as he could. The little creatures fluttered to sting and bite him, before speeding off through the window into the world beyond. For the first time ever, Arya began to shout at his wife in anger. Pandora yelled back and the couple realised in horror that they were arguing.
Let me out! interrupted a high voice. Pandora and Arya grabbed onto each other in panic. The voice was coming from the chest. Don't be afraid of me! Let me out and I can help you! came the voice.
What do you think?
Pandora whispered to Arya, wide-eyed.
Surely you can't do any more mischief than you already have done, he grumbled. So, Pandora shut her eyes and apened Mercury's chest for a second time.
Out of the deep, dark chest fluttered a single shining spirit like a beautiful. It was Hope. Pandora and Arya sobbed with relief as she fluttered against their skin and soothed their stinging wounds. Then she was gone, darting out of the window and into the world after the evils. Luckily, Hope has stayed with us ever since.

I Must Feed My Mother

A king wants a splendid elephant for himself. Then, why does he let it go back to the forest as soon as he finds one. Let's read and find out!  Long, long ago,  in a forest, lived an elephant. He was big and strong and his skin was as white as milk. The white elephant loved his mother more than anything else in the world. More than himself, more than the sweet wild berries and fruits on the trees in the the forest, more than the juicy tubers hidden in the ground. The white elephants mother was blind. He would take good care of her. He found a nice, cool cave for her. In front of the cave, was a lake full of clear, shining water and lotuses. Water always makes an elephant's heart glad. The white elephant would fast feed his mother, only then would he eat. Whenever he could, he would tell her stories and tell her how the forest looked in the hot summer and during the monsoon when it poured. He would speak to her of the hills, of squirrels, birds and butterflies with b...

The Story Of Aakash

Mohammad Arbaz Arya was a very big name for a very little boy. I remember him as Arya which was what everybody called him. He lived in a small village near the foot of a mountain. His home was a mud but with a thatched roof. He had helped his family built it. Arya wore a cotton dhoti and a simple vest. He herded and milked his father's cows and collected firewood. He was a playful boy who loved to climb trees and play in the expansive green fields. He relished the hot gruel his mother cooked for him on a simmering coal fire. One day, Arya's father sent him on an errand. He was to go to the next village to bring some medicines from the doctor for his sick granny and get back as soon as he could. Remember, Arya,'' his father said, you must return home right after the job is done, no dilly-dallying! There is a solar eclipse today and you must not be outside under any circumstances. Go fast. Arya interrupted his father with a child's curiosity, Why is it dangerous, f...

WHY THE BAT FLIES AT NIGHT

Who is not afraid of a bat? Almost none of us would like the idea of spending even a minute in a cave with a bat. But do read this interesting folktale in order to realize a few things about this flying mammal. Honey, the king of Cloud Land, celebrated his precious daughter Raki's marriage by calling for a Great Meeting. Honey asked Bat to go to invite Sun and he asked Dove to invite Moon. Dove flew as fast as she could to convey the message and Moon arrived on time. Bat, however, was mischievous and playful. He was distracted by many things on the way. He got talking to Eagle, then decided to have a little snooze before going to Sun and, as usual, oberslept. So when Sun failed to arrive, Honey got suspicious and requested Dove to investigate. Go and find out what has happened, the king ordered Dove. When approached, Sun said he had not been invited at all. So Dove apologised over and over again and requested him to attend the Great Meeting. In the meantime, king Honey ha...
